Our Lady Star of the Sea 2010 Cover Award Winner
By now you have started your Student Artwork Cover Contest and are well on your way to submitting your cover on December 1st… Right?!
Well here are some of my handy Tips and Tricks to help you along the way…
Get the kids interested. In order to pick a winner you first need submissions! Make sure to promote your Cover Contest with posters and flyers around the school. Get your school’s art teacher involved to help make some engaging promotional materials. The more you promote, the more interested the kids will be. When you make your promotional posters, here are some specs to keep in mind:
1) 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper
2) Unlined Paper
3) Make sure to include student’s name and grade (add it on the back on the drawing in legible hand writing when you submit it to us)
4) Try to allow a 1/2 inch border around the outside so that none of their artwork or text is cut off during scanning
Give them a theme to work off of. Giving the kids a theme will help get their creative juices flowing. Even if the theme is the school’s mascot it will help them hit the ground running.
Allow the kids to be creative! Did you know that your cover submissions don’t need to just be drawings? Students are able to submit multi-media covers with cut outs and any (2-dimensional) objects they can get their hands on. Check out the British School of Washington’s awesome multi-media yearbook cover from last season (above).

Vienna Elementary - Front Cover

Vienna Elementary - Back Cover
Have the winner on the Front and the Runners-Up on the back! Having a student artwork cover is great. It engages the students and allows them to feel more involved with their yearbook. Why not include even more of the submissions by adding some runner-up artwork to your back cover?! You can include up to 6 runners-up cover submissions. I would recommend 4 at most so that the images can be a little bigger on the back.
Hint: You can even scan in all other submissions (other than the cover winners and runners-up) and import them into EZBook as Clip Art. This way you can include a few more of the student’s masterpieces within the yearbook!
We do the work for you! When you submit your original artwork to Splendid we have skilled graphic artists scan in the submissions for you. We go in and take out pencil marks or blemishes, add a border (with a color of your choice), as well as add a text line with the student’s name and grade. These services are all included with your Custom Cover publishing option! It’s a wonderful thing
Happy September!
Well the school year is well under way and we’re busy as ever! Last week all Yearbook Kits were assembled and mailed out to you. You should have received your kit in the mail by now, and if you haven’t please let me know.
Next up: October 21st – signed Reservation Forms due
December 1st – COVER DEADLINE!
Handy Tip: This year, why not try to have a Student Artwork Cover Contest? It engages the kids in helping with the book, it allows you to show off your students’ artistic talents, you can have the winner on the front and the runners up on the back or used in the inside as clip art!
And not to mention Custom Covers make for an EXCELLENT promotion of your yearbook. Your kids will get excited about seeing their or their friend’s drawings on the yearbook and are more likely to purchase
Have a great Fall!!!
